Education and Courses - Learning with BCA to Sail Offshore

A primary mission of BCA is to prepare sailors for offshore voyaging; to make the dream of sailing over the horizon and across oceans not only feasible, but a reality for those prepared to pursue it seriously. The cornerstone of this preparation is the delivery of appropriate and first rate marine education programs which are generally not available elsewhere. There are four pillars to this education program:

BCA Classroom Courses - Knowledge and Certification

BCA offers a series of marine education courses designed specifically for those heading offshore. These are developed in conjunction with professional instructors, combined with the feedback of countless Bluewater members who provide guidance on what information those heading out really need to know. Subjects include navigation, psychology of voyaging that deals with fear and apprehension, vessel preparation, radar operation, diesel maintenance, long distance communication and offshore weather. Courses offered vary from chapter to chapter and are open to members and non-members. Prices are very competitive and are lower for BCA members. For more information and to register click on the course of interest on the Events Calendar then click the register online link and follow the registration steps.

Fleet - More Intense Learning for Those Departing Soon

Fleet is really an education focus group for those planning to head offshore in the next year or two. The group meets regularly and offers additional training in the form of meetings, workshops, vendors visits and boat visits. Fleet offers the best value in BCA education. For a small fee of $50 - $60 (varies by chapter) the training received and friendships made are priceless. Fleet is also excellent for Doners who are preparing for another voyage; get primed, updated and meet the people you will be voyaging with. To join fleet you must be a BCA member. V.I.C.E. - An Offshore Sailing Experience Close to Home

Open to BCA members only, V.I.C.E. (Vancouver Island Cruising Experience) is a mini offshore shakedown trip. Sail away from Vancouver Island, over the horizon and into the night in the company and security of a fleet of like minded, adventurous sailors. Sail in the open ocean for a few days. Test your boat. Test yourself. Take the first step of your offshore adventure. Learn by doing. Comprised of boats from all three BCA chapters. For more information on VICE click here.

Mentors - Learn from Those Who Have Gone Before

The ranks of BCA are filled with exceptional sailors who have travelled to the far corners of the globe. Many have circumnavigated. BCA offers the experience of hundreds of thousands of sea miles through mentors who will volunteer to help others pursue the dream. They are there for the asking. Available to BCA members only.
