I found it catastrophizing, overly alarmist, speculative and alltogether inappropriately negative. IF the article is a true reflection of our reality, we might as well all just give up on the dream. In contrast, I would argue that offshore cruising has NEVER been safer than it is today, for a wide variety of reasons that should be obvious.

Enough of the 'over-the-top' climate hysteria. It is becoming 'unbecoming' and unbearable.

We're in the Fleet 2024 group and we are keen to speak to any cat-loving BCA members who aren't planning too much 'blue water' time in the coming years and may be interested in fostering King Kpelle our wonderful 11 year old cat while we're away offshore.

He's a healthy, independent and lovely cat who acquired our family when we were living in west Africa. Since then he's travelled with us to many exciting places including years spent living in the UK, Norway and most recently Canada. During Covid he bravely spent a couple of months cruising the fjords in Norway on our 32ft boat with two kids under the age of 4, but he's never been a huge fan of boatlife preferring to keep his paws on terra firma as much as he can. Can't imagine that we put him off!?

This doesn't marry well with our plan to set sail on a our offshore adventure for a few years this July. 

We think he'll be happier in a nice home then the high seas.

King Kpelle would most like a family without dogs or other cats and a home with accessible outdoor space. In return he'll offer tuneful morning wakeup calls and unlimited cuddles and sweet companionship.

The kids don't know this is on the cards as they presume he's coming with, but if anyone is interested in hearing more please do let us know.

These are allegedly legal, vector CHS charts at a fraction of the cost of approved local vendors.  Has anyone else tried these and had success?  Would appreciated chatting / advice.  Thanks

*Should specify: For Vancouver - boat will be at Mosquito Creek (already have moorage). If was to go to Victoria - could be at any marina I could get into that's accessible from downtown Victoria (ex. Sidney would work) 

Also, which do you think is a cheaper place to live/moor/gradually upgrade the boat (likely not living aboard  due to wait lists and career)? 

I'd always thought  Vancouver due to being able to get out without issues from currents, and quick year round access to the Strait OR the Howe Sound (given sometimes one has  wind  when the other doesn't), and the potential to easily sail north up the straight to Sunshine Coast/Northern Gulf Islands or across to the Southern Gulf Islands. 

An individual I respect suggested Victoria might be superior due to access to the Juan de Fuca Strait (probably more wind/swell than the  Georgia  Strait making it better for  training  to go offshore) and easier access to the Gulf Islands - but it seems to me the Gulf Islands are more sheltered (less windy) for day sailing  then what you could get right out of  English Bay (dipping into the Strait or Howe Sound), you'd have to deal with tidal passages to get out into the  Georgia  Strait and as such your options for weekend  sails  might be more limited to the Southern Gulf Islands. 

Also think costs might end up similar in both?

Having a bow thruster on the boat we finally decided to get it to work - you never know.  It's ready to be dropped off for repair, looking for recommendations on where to take it to for bolts replacements, etc.

Searching the web simply provides a ton of vague and conflicting advice.

Basically I think we all wonder at times where to fly our flag of registry, the courtesy flag of a country we enter, the various burgees we accumulate and just imitate what we see around us at the time.

I think most of us fly the Bluewater burgee on the port spreader pretty much all the time until it falls apart, but is there an agreed protocol as to where, when and how, and how many if any other burgees may join it up there?

Recently myself and two partners purchased equal shares in a sailboat. One of the owners is Canadian and the other two are U.S. citizens. When changing the registration with Transport Canada we were told that the registered owner must be Canadian, there is no provision for owners of other nationalities. If this is the case and we only show the Canadian as the owner of the boat what would be the consequence if the two U.S. owners sail the boat into a foreign port such as Mexico or another country? Would there be an issue if the owner was not on board and the registration certificate did not list the sailors who were on board and in command of the vessel? 

If anyone has experience with this issue or advice in this regard, we would love to hear about it. Or, if you have a suggestion on who we might contact to get more information, that would be appreciated as well.
