NOAA weather charts unavailable

The weather maps from NOAA are no longer available. Does anyone know of an alternative source of ocean weather maps? We found these invaluable when we were at sea and I frequently use them now to get a good picture of the weather.

New Mac Grib Viewer beta Testers Needed.

I follow a blog written by a sailor/computer programmer. He has developed a Grib viewer for MAC and given me a beta copy for testing. I asked if he minded me offering it to my fellow BCA members and he was quite excited.

"LuckGrib is a Mac only product, 10.10 (Yosemite) and above. It was designed with sailors in mind, although it should appeal to anybody who is interested in weather forecasting. I’m getting the GRIB data from NOAA, and depending on the model you choose, the data is refreshed either twice a day or four times a day.

Its not very often that a new GRIB viewer comes along. By getting involved early in the beta program and providing feedback, suggestions or praise, you have the opportunity to influence the direction of the program. The first release of this application is approaching, there will likely be many future improvements. Get involved and help make LuckGrib the best GRIB viewer available!"

I hope this doesn't come across as spam but if anyone's interested in giving it a try send me an email.

Cruising friends are presently in Alaska, after navigating the northwest passage last summer. He has asked me if anyone has personal experience with the timing of his follow on passage from San Francisco next year- he wants to leave in February 2016 and head south to Mexico, Costa Rica and then over to the Galapagos, south to Easter Island and then SW to Isla Chiloe. He would appreciate feedback especially if you have sailed this route or know of a yacht that has. He is trying to get to Valpariso or Puerto Montt by the end of June 2016.

Weather Information for the Caribbean

Former BCA member Francois Dubuc is currently sailing with his family in the Caribbean.

A family member who is also one of his safety persons is requesting information on preferred weather/marine websites to keep better track of him. They recently ran into a weather system that disabled both their sails and their engine while enroute to Jamaica. They made repairs to engine and altered course.

Wondering if any of our members have experience and suggestions for that area. They are currently on a course for Isla de Providencia, East of Nicaragua and expect to make landfall in the next 10 hours, at which time no doubt they will be reassessing their situation.

Paper Charts: Roll or fold?

With my new boat, I now have quite a few paper charts to manage. Given that the paper charts are somewhat of a back up for the Electronics, what are doner's thoughts on rolling charts vs folding? rolled charts take much more space and can be hard to sort through.

Thanks,
