CANCELLED - Learn from a radar expert. After completion of this seminar, students will be able to set up their radars for maximum results and interpret the display under a variety of conditions. Purpose and Benefits:
Learn from radar experts. After completion of this seminar, students will be able to set up their radars for maximum results and interpret the 
display under a variety of conditions.


You will learn simple techniques to:

  • Identify land-masses, other vessels and transient targets
  • Use radar effectively for collision avoidance and navigation
  • Understand the new generation of AIS and integrated radar systems which combine chart and radar technology
  • Manage and understand the issues inherent in modern integrated navigation systems
  • Interpret and control the display under a variety of conditions
  • Recognize and compensate for rain and sea clutter, interference and side-lobe echoes
  • Use and understand ARPA (automatic radar plotting aid)
  • Put your new-found skills to work in a real-time, state-of-the-art maritime simulator

  

Instructor:
Kevin Monahan, an experienced captain, retired Canadian Coast Guard officer, and author of: The Radar Book: Effective Navigation and 
Collision Avoidance.  Kevin will have all his books available for sale.  

Cheryl Caldwell, Master Mariner, Chief Simulator Instructor at the Western Maritime Institute.

Format:
Morning:  Classroom style with extensive slides showing various types of radar screens and scenarios related to land observation, collision 
avoidance and clutter issues (1/2 day).  

Afternoon:  Simulator-based training to better understand collision avoidance, relative motion and operating the radar in adverse conditions (1/2 day).

Course Materials:
Registration includes The Radar Book: Effective Navigation and Collision Avoidance. This excellent book is used in the United States Power Squadron
Marine Radar Seminar. The book retails for $$29.95; for more info click here.

Lunch:
With a one hour lunch break (reduced if students request) you may bring a lunch bag or go to The Timberland Pub which is a short distance away.

Location:
Western Maritime Institute is the largest private marine college for professional mariners in Canada. Recent additions to the college include a state-of-the-art marine bridge simulator. The Institute is accredited by Transport Canada, DNV GL and the provincial BC Education Quality Assurance program. Though its address for postal purposes is “Ladysmith”, it is actually located close to Nanaimo Airport in Cassidy (map will be sent out to registrants one week before the course).

Cost  -  Individual and Couples Pricing:
BCA Members - $110 (includes The Radar Book)
                         - $95 for spouse / partner if registered at same time

Non-Members - $130 (includes The Radar Book)
                        - $105 for spouse / partner if registered at same time

Note: only one book per couple.

Cancellation:
A $15 processing fee will be charged in the event of participant cancellation.
