Hand and Sewing Machine Sail Repair
with Nicole Foster of Evolution Sails
Learn how to recognize wear & repair sails

The Essentials of Sail and Canvas Repair
Nicole will guide you through sail repair/maintenance including troubleshooting typical sail shape issues, identifying trouble spots, assessing typical wear areas, repair techniques/methods and care. This course will go over how to use the SailRite sewing machine and/or other typical small sewing machines.  Participants are encouraged to bring their own sewing machine for hands on instruction.

This course will also include knowledge of equipment requirements, proper fit and use of the palm, hand stitching techniques, including stitching on webbing and ropes. For offshore preparation Nicole will cover  how to repair where a machine in not available, emergency repairs and longer-term fixes.   Bring your own sail to gain insights into identification of issues and repair. Nicole will choose examples and provide guidance to the class for repair strategies and techniques. Nicole will provide insights and feedback into your specific sail repair questions and issues.    (Note: with time and space limitations, it is possible that not all sails will be addressed.)

Evolution can supply sail repair kits and materials including: palms and mending kits as well as an extensive list of supplies. Pre-order 3 weeks in advance, to guarantee delivery at the course.  Note: This is not required for the course.  (if interested, contact Jason: jason@evolutionsails.com)

Instructor:
Nicole is a native Vancouverite who caught the sailing bug in 1968 and hasn’t left the ocean since.  She started working in the sail-making industry in 1974 for Thunderbird Sails.  Over a 30 year career of building sails she has worked for 5 sail-makers, including 10 years each with international companies.  One ‘claim to fame’ is building a Star Class set that won the World Championships!  To say Nicole has a strong background of how sails come together is an understatement.  She has built sails in size ranging from the 89’ Schooners’ Marble Head Class, to radio controlled boats.  An avid racer, Nicole has logged over 20 000 hrs on the race course.  Nicole also has 5 years of experience consulting on electronics and sailboat rig and deck layouts.  Today you will find Nicole accepting sail repairs at the Evolution Sail Loft, doing offshore sail preparation seminars, or coaching new keel-boat owners in English Bay.
