This course is intended for people who own and maintain their own sailboat, or those who want to gain a better understanding of standing and running rigging, including proper inspection and maintenance. The instructor will explain the basic principals of rigging inspection & maintenance, and cruising preparation.

    Have you dropped and inspected your mast lately? Ever?
    Where to get it checked - professional riggers - tuning?
    How to check?


    How often to check?
        rings vs cotter pins, clevis pins, toggles, connections. Identify corrosion in SS accurately
        swage fittings, blue dye vs microscope for cracks
        rigging tape or alternates
        spreaders and chafe guards/caps, shrouds, tangs
        mast cap and attachments
        keel-stepped vs deck-stepped mast
        halyard sheaves and axle pins
        chainplates, stanchions, lifelines Investigate Rust in Chainplates 
        windex, anchor light, antennas
        radar mount, steaming light, and other accessories

Running Rigging

    Types, strength
    Maintenance (washing/rinsing)
    When to replace ?
    Typical messenger lines and securing methods
    Wear points, lines crossed
    Jib car inspection and maintenance
    Winter/off-season maintenance.

 

 An the "on the Boat" demonstration will be arranged if possible

Format:

Classroom with examples, and boat tour on dock afterwards.


Instructor:

Stewart Jones and Pip Osbourne have a lifetime of rigging, industry and offshore sailing experience. You will find them at Pro-Tech Yacht Services a full service rigging and metal fabrication shop that includes safety equipment, deck-ware, and more.


Location:     1300 Discovery St.     Vancouver -  The white 2 story building with  little masts all around it.  BIG Door at east End...


Lunch:
  The Galley Bistro will be open to buy lunch just down the hall.

  20 persons .

Non-Members: $65 each

Cancellation Fee:
There is a $15 processing fee in the event of student cancellation.
