About the Adventure Talk

Join sailor, instructor and adventurer Christof Marti as he lays out his preparations for the Vic-Maui 2018 offshore race aboard Salient his Beneteau First 40.7 and shares the tales from a race that had unexpected weather and was too close to call until the finish line.  This resulted in an epic upwind sailing challenge for well over half the race instead of the usual downwind ride.

He will contrast that with the return Maui-Vancouver cruise sharing lessons learned that are as applicable for the cruiser as they are for the ocean racer. Preparing a boat for offshore racing or cruising is not that different. The difference starts once the bow lines are cast off. During the race we pushed boat and team hard. Cruising back to Vancouver we geared down when the winds picked up instead of trying to squeeze extra speed out of the boat. We spent time fishing for Mahi Mahi, went for a swim a thousand miles from shore and enjoyed Captain’s hour at watch change. We sailed with dolphins in our bow wave and enjoyed many spectacular sunset on the peaceful ocean.
