Vancouver 2019 - Tides and Currents BC coast and beyond

The movement of water under the influence of the tides is a constant factor in the lives of boaters, especially on the BC Coast, where some of the fastest tidal currents in the world may be found. The Inside Passage has a unique water system where the tides power strong currents around the islands and in many of the key passes. But a good understanding of tides and currents can mean the difference between a smooth ride and a rough ride for a captain and crew. Sailing towards Alaska ?

Tides and Currents

Focus on BC Coast and Beyond

with Kevin Monahan

Sunday March 3, 2019 , 10 am - 5 pm

Jericho Sailing Center 1300 Discovery St.

Between Locarno & Jericho Beaches.

In this session we will explore:

a) how the lunar cycles create water movement and the various stages and characteristics of the tidal cycle.

b) the effect of weather on tides and tidal currents, especially the interaction of wind and currents

c) the characteristics of various tidal rapids and the hydrodynamics of fjords, and other tidal channels with specific focus on tidal currents on the BC Coast

d) how to read tide and current predictions and to interpolate intermediate heights and speeds, and how to estimate tidal heights and currents for secondary stations

e) the interaction of tidal and non-tidal currents

f) How Air Pressure can affect the water levels and currents force.

The seminar includes a section on ocean currents, non-tidal currents, wind and wave and shallow water interactions.

By the end of the course, participants will:

  • have general strategies for managing tidal currents
  • know how to plan for tidal currents to assist (rather than resist) a vessel's progress
  • know how to read the tide and current tables
  • have specific strategies for managing Johnstone Strait and Cordero Channels as well as other tidal rapids

The seminar also includes practice calculation of proper timing and will lead to an understanding of tide and current interactions world-wide.

The course is presented in a graphic and interactive manner. Though the specific focus is on the West Coast, it is applicable to tide and current regimes world-wide.
