Ken Gillstrom has prepared for and executed hundreds of successful passages over the past 20 years, ranging from short day passages to passages of 4800 miles taking 34 days. Every passage brings different challenges. Even the same passage at a different time of year will present new challenges. Ken will prepare you to execute your own successful passages to any part of the world, based on individual abilities.

    Advantages and disadvantages of various hull shapes, deck layouts, sail plans,

Reefing Systems, Preventers, Poles
    Navigation: Electronic, Paper, Sextant     
     Communication: Sat phone, SSB, VHF, InReach  
     Steering: Hand steering, Autopilot, Steering Vane     
     Safety and Survival

3. Sail Theory      
  Sail dynamics, Center of Effort, True vs Apparent Wind     
Sail trim basics

 4. Weather Basics
Air Movement, Global Weather, Frontal Systems  

 5. Passage Planning     
     -Factors to consider when devising the plan:  
          Vessel: Speed, Water and Fuel Capacities, Storage, Refrigeration,      
          Crew: Experience, Physical and mental limitations  
          Weather and how it will relate to vessel design and crew abilities
    -Weather – Global and Local influences             
    - Navigation
    - Destinations and alternates     
               Clearances, Special Documentation, Restrictions, Formalities, Agents
          Routes, Waypoints and hazards     
          Tide and Current considerations
    -Developing the plan

6. Passage Preparation     
     -Vessel:     Inspections, Repairs, Set up
     -Crew:     Safety Briefing, Watch Schedules, Meal Preparation     
    - Weather: Timing/Weather Window

7. Executing the Plan       
     -Casting off     
     -Keeping the boat moving
          Heavy weather tactics     
     -Tracking weather while underway

     -Health and Safety while underway  
    - Making Landfall

8.   Including your partner as an equal decision maker.

9. Review of a number of real life passages on Voyageur 10.10
