VI Victoria 2019 - Abandon Ship: Stay Alive in Your Life Raft

All is lost! Your boat is sinking and the unthinkable is happening. You must abandon ship. Now what do you do? Join instructor Captain Jim Steele, CD, for classroom and pool-time to find out.

Course Information:

 

In the classroom you will learn:

 

·      How to use a life raft

·      What to pack in your ditch-bag

·      How to increase your chance of survival & rescue

·      How to live in a life raft

·      How to use rescue equipment

·      How to use signalling equipment

·      How to be rescued by a helicopter

 

In the swimming pool, you will:

 

·      Deploy a life raft

·      Deploy your personal floatation device (PFD) ($30 gift certificate will be provided to buy replacement CO2 canisters)

·      Swim in your clothing and foul-weather gear

·      Board a life raft in wet foul-weather gear

·      (Sorry, there will be no actual helicopter rescues.)

 

Format:

The first half of the course will take place in the classroom at the pool, with the last half in the pool. You will be fully clothed in the pool. Debrief in the hot tub!

 

Bring:

 

·      Your PFD. If you do not wish to deploy your automatic-inflatable PFD, you still need to bring a manually-inflatable or standard PFD. Lifejackets must be worn during the exercise.

·      Foul weather gear, including sea boots

·      A change of clothes and a towel

·      You may want a notebook and pen

 

Instructor:

Captain Jim Steele completed 36 years in the navy, then he obtained his Transport Canada Master Mariner Certificate and began another career with BC Ferries, first in the fleet as a Relief Mate and Master in the Northern Gulf Islands. For the last seven years he was Manager of Marine Safety and Operational Training.

 

Since his retirement, Captain Steele has been delivering training in small communities along the BC Coast, the Interior, in the Arctic and across the Prairies. Since 2013, he has been teaching these subjects for Camosun College as well as delivering a refresher course for members of the marine community who are writing exams to become a BC Coast Pilot.

 

He is a member of the Royal Victoria Yacht Club and he and his wife sail a Cal 34.

 

Dan Bieler is from Pacific Coast Life Raft and is an advocate of marine safety. He will instruct on provisioning your life raft.

 

Cost:

BCA Members: $130

Non-BCA Members: $160

 

Maximum Class Size:

20 Participants

 

Cancellation:

A $15 processing fee will be charged in the event of participant cancellation.
