Maintenance & Inspection of Rigging Standing & Running

with Pro-Tech Yachts

This course is intended for people who own and maintain their own sailboat, or those who want to gain a better understanding of standing and running rigging, including proper inspection and maintenance. The instructor will explain the basic principals of rigging inspection & maintenance, and all cruising preparation:

    2nd safety line
    bosuns chair
    tool pouch
    messenger line

Standing Rigging

    Have you dropped and inspected your mast lately? Ever?
    Where to get it checked - professional riggers - tuning?
    How to check?
    How often to check?
        rings vs cotter pins, clevis pins, toggles, connections
        swage fittings, blue dye vs microscope for cracks
        rigging tape or alternates
        spreaders and chafe guards/caps, shrouds, tangs
        mast cap and attachments
        keel-stepped vs deck-stepped mast
        halyard sheaves and axle pins
        chainplates, stanchions, lifelines
        windex, anchor light, antennas
        radar mount, steaming light, and other accessories

Running Rigging

    Types, strength
    Maintenance (washing/rinsing)
    When to replace ?
    Typical messenger lines and securing methods
    Wear points, lines crossed
    Jib car inspection and maintenance
    Winter/off-season maintenance.

Classroom with examples, and boat tour on dock afterwards.


Stewart Jones and Pip Osbourne have a lifetime of industry experience and and offshore sailing. They are highly experienced and knowledgeable rigging specialists and currently run Pro-Tech Yacht Services, a full service Rigging and the Metal Fabrication and more, shop...and also includes safety, deckware, and more....


Location: Burrard Civic Marina; past the planetarium, and beside coast guard station, on Whyte Avenue.

Please bring a bag lunch or you may go to Cypress & Cornwall area.

Maximum Class Size:
 40 persons!

BCA Members: $30
Non-Members: $45 each

Parking: Free for attendees, there will be a person granting entry at the swing gate entrance to the marina.  The parking lot is then to your right.

Cancellation Fee:
There is a $15 processing fee in the event of student cancellation.
