The Advanced Marine Radar course is for those who have taken Basic Marine Radar with Kevin Monahan and wish to increase their practical and technological knowledge. With real-life screen-captures, simulations and other audio-visual effects, Kevin will soon have you managing your radar like a pro.

Purpose and Benefits:
Learn from a radar expert. With real-life screen-captures, simulations and other audio-visual effects, Kevin Monahan will soon have you managing your radar like a pro.

Participants will learn about:

  • The new generation of AIS and integrated radar systems which combine chart and radar technology
  • The strengths and weaknesses of modern solid-state radar, Doppler radar and broadband radar
  • Managing and understanding the issues inherent in modern integrated navigation systems
  • Advanced navigation techniques, especially for navigation in remote areas where electronic charts are not dependable
  • Advanced collision avoidance techniques and radar plotting

Pre-Requisite:
Basic Marine Radar is a pre-requisite for this course.

Instructor:
Kevin Monahan, an experienced captain, retired Canadian Coast Guard officer, and author of: 
The Radar Book: Effective Navigation and Collision Avoidance Kevin will have all his books available for sale.

Format:
Classroom style with extensive slides showing various types of radar screens and scenarios.

Lunch:
As this is a half day course there will be a short break for coffee (provided); you are welcome to bring a snack.

Location:
Western Maritime Institute is the largest private marine college for professional mariners in Canada. Recent additions to the college include a state-of-the-art marine bridge simulator. The Institute is accredited by Transport Canada, DNV GL and the provincial BC Education Quality Assurance program. Though its address for postal purposes is “Ladysmith”, it is actually located close to Nanaimo Airport in Cassidy (map will be sent out to registrants one week before the course).

Cost:
BCA Members - $65 (assumes you already have The Radar Book)
Non-Members - $85 (assumes you already have The Radar Book)

Note: If you need to purchase The Radar Book, the BCA price is $14.95.

Cancellation:
A $15 processing fee will be charged in the event of participant cancellation.
