Tell a Friend About This EventTell a Friend

MIST (Mid Island Sail Training) is a weekend of camaraderie and fun with the goal of making us better sailors in a more basic, practical sense. It is hoped that participants will arrive at the docks at Newcastle Island, Nanaimo with their boats, although in the past we have had "boatless" people who have managed to book berths on others boats and have a great time.

MIST (Mid Island Sail Training) is intended to help members become more competent, self sufficient sailors focusing on more traditional skills rather than relying on the latest technology to save the day. It is also a very social weekend starting with a happy hour on the Friday evening and a potluck dinner on Saturday, both hosted by the Dodge's at their home on Protection Island .

MIST is a weekend of camaraderie and fun with the goal of making us better sailors in a more basic, practical sense. It is hoped that participants will arrive at the docks at Newcastle Island, Nanaimo with their boats, although in the past we have had "boatless" people who have managed to book berths on others boats and have a great time.

Course Information:
The focus this year will be to critically look at our boats to identify breakdowns and failures before they occur, how to
minimize them and how to deal with them after they happen because, as Nigel Calder says, “If it ain’t broke, just wait”. The topic for Sunday will be heavy weather sailing tactics, reefing, heaving too and drogues with time on the water to practice.

The program always seems to evolve with the interests and needs of the participants so don't be afraid to request any non electronic training you may want.

Registration Information:
MIST is limited to 22 people.
Advance registration is required - please email nanamuk@hotmail.com or call 250-753-1245.

Registration Fee:
Cost per participant is $10, payable upon arrival.

Suggested Moorage:
Newcastle Island dock or mooring buoys, or anchoring in Mark Bay.

Mentors:
Skippers are encouraged to bring a mentor along with them. Request one when registering or search under RESOURCES/MENTORS on the BCA website.

Don't have a boat?
Boat-less sailors who wish to participate as crew can also register by contacting Rob Dodge; effort will be made to find a host boat and accommodation. Boat-less sailors are also encouraged to ask at Club Nights and/or use the website to try and line up their own ride.
