Mid-Island Sail Training Weekend (MIST)
Tell a Friend About This EventTell a Friend

Mid Island Sail Training is a weekend of camaraderie and fun with the goal of making us better sailors in a more basic, practical sense. Circumnavigator Cresswell Walker will be this year's guest presenter. If you can't make it to Nanaimo on Saturday, you are welcome to participate on Sunday only. This is a chance to check out all those theories you read about over the winter, and the new equipment you just got at the boat show.

MIST (Mid Island Sail Training) is a weekend of camaraderie and fun with the goal of making us better sailors in a more basic, practical sense. It is hoped that participants will arrive at the docks at Newcastle Island, Nanaimo with their boats, although in the past we have had "boatless" people who have managed to book berths on others boats and have a great time.

Course Outline

Friday, May 11
Please bring something to contribute to an informal happy hour at 5pm on Protection Island (Grace & Rob Dodge, hosts).  BONUS: video and slideshow to illustrate what can happen when proper care and attention is lacking when anchoring.

Saturday, May 12:  9:00am - 5:00pm
Wind steering and anchoring in extreme situations.

Wind vanes:

  • why to have one
  • range of options and how they work
  • the need to balance the boat
  • maintenance and spare parts
  • boat inspections to look at those that already have one and what might work for those that don't

Anchoring in special problem conditions:

  • 2 cases of multiple groundings -why they happened and how they could have been avoided
  • when and how to set an anchor alarm - an 8 mile drag!!
  • anchoring in coral - risks and possible solutions and the down sides to each
  • anchor and gear selection - how big and how much chain

Is your boat truly ready for the open ocean:

  • jack lines and tethers
  • sea berths and lee cloths
  • hand holds
  • storage
  • food choices to avoid sea sickness
  • fall backs for when your electronics don't work as planned

Potluck supper on Protection Island.

Sunday, May 13:  9:00am - ??
The day will begin with developing a compass deviation card, followed by a blind navigation challenge.
Wind permitting there will be an opportunity to practice heaving too, reefing on all points of sail, balancing the boat, and using the wind vane if fitted.

The program always seems to evolve with the interests and needs of the participants so don't be afraid to request any non electronic training you may want - heaving too, reefing on ALL points of sail, wind vanes etc.

MIST is limited to 22 people.
Advance registration is required - please email or call 250-753-1245.
