Safety at Sea: Emergencies on Board

Saturday January 27, 2018

Vancouver Maritime Museum

Course Outline:

This is an essential course for anyone who spends time on the water, whether making an ocean passage or local cruising.

1.     Learn to expect the unexpected and do everything possible to PREVENT emergencies from ever happening.

2.     Develop safety procedures on your vessel to be PREPARED for various emergencies.

3.     Techniques on how to REACT to and MANAGE emergency situations (both physically and emotionally) if they occur on board.

The possibility of emergencies at sea can create a great deal of anxiety.  Learn how to reduce anxiety by taking steps to reduce risk and prevent situations from ever arising. Have preparations in place to deal with emergencies and manage those that do occur.

In this course you will learn what to do when things go wrong, and why they went wrong by looking at various case studies such as the tragedy on the Picton Castle.

Discussions will include fire, flooding, mechanical issues, medical emergencies and crew overboard.

We will also look at the psychological impact of stressful situations and controlling your reactions when dealing with emergencies.

This full day seminar includes an in depth look at all safety equipment and abandoning ship equipment and procedures.

Classroom demonstration on types and use of flares, inflatable life vests, survival suits and video of life raft procedures

Ken will share his experiences and teach you strategies that he has developed to prevent and manage emergency situations on board your own boat.

Participants will receive a course binder that includes course notes, case studies, related articles, copies of safety briefings, boat checklist, distress communication form, log sheets and daily planning sheets.
