"So you own a boat!

Come & meet Clio Smeeton and Ken Weagle at the Calgary Club Night on October 3.

Clio and Ken will outline the process they went through in buying a sail boat - how they decided what they wanted, how they financed it and what boats they considered.

  • Our choice PESCADOU and the process of buying a boat in a foreign country (Turkey).
  • Early changes/problems with the boat and our solutions, including cookers, toilets and electronics.
  • Two topics that always have a funny and serious side:
    • repairs in foreign countries
    • what to look for in marinas where you might leave your boat when you return to Canada.

Also they will introduce you to their cruise up the Danube River from Yalova on the Sea of Marmara to Kelheim, Germany.

Clio Smeeton was born on the northwest frontier in India (Pakistan).  Spent her youth on Salt Spring Island, BC and on her parent’s boat, Tzu Hang.  Clio graduated from St. Martin’s School of Art, London, UK with a Fine Art Degree.  After graduation she modeled in London and Paris.  From modeling she progressed to doing contract collections of animals in Africa for zoos in North America, and became the Curator of the Children’s Exhibit at Calgary Zoo in the 1960’s after bringing a collection to Calgary.  In the early 1960s Clio and her parents bought the land on which the Cochrane Ecological Institute is now located.  Clio sailed with her parents on Tsu Hang from Victoria to Melbourne, Australia in 1956, and in later years in Africa, the eastern Med and south east Asia.  In 1964 she also sailed with them from Hokkaido, Japan via the Aleutians to Victoria BC.  In 2005 Clio and Ken took their first boat, a 22 ft. Chestnut Freighter canoe on a 1000 mile trip from Fort Providence to Inuvik, NWT tracing the trip of Alexander Mackenzie.  In 2006 Clio and Ken bought their second boat PESCADOU in Marmasis, Turkey.  Since then they have cruised in the Turkish and Greek Mediterranean and Aegean, the Black Sea, the Danube, the canals of France, Germany and the Netherlands, the English Channel, North Sea and the Baltic.  PESCADOU is presently on the hard in Oban, Scotland awaiting their return in 2018.

Ken Weagle was born in Bridgewater, Nova Scotia and spent his early life playing on boats and rafts on the South Shore of Nova Scotia.  He attended UNB, Lakehead University and Memorial University.  Ken has worked in all provinces of Canada except Quebec and PEI and in 5 countries, internationally.  For many years of his career he worked as a Fisheries Biologist and Water Quality Specialist and spent many seasons on the water sampling or fishing.  In 1997 Ken was hired by the Gwich'in Tribal Council in Inuvik to set up the Gwich'in Land and Water Board.  While in Inuvik he found a 22 ft. Chestnut Freighter Canoe, which he immediately bought.  Over the next few years he rebuilt her completely and Clio and Ken have enjoyed many trips in this classic vessel.  These trips include many extended trips in the Mackenzie Delta, Great Slave Lake and the trip down the full length of the Mackenzie River.  In 2004 Clio and Ken decided to have a small change in their lives and the search for a suitable boat began.  They looked on the west and to a lesser extent the east coast of North America with no luck.  After looking at a Fisher 37 in Vancouver they firmed up their wants and needs and started to look internationally for the right ship.  In 2006 they had found three ships that matched their criteria in Turkey and they flew over to buy one.  They have now owned PESCADOU for 11 years and used her for a minimum of three months every year.
