Wash Down Pump

We are considering installing a wash down pump to rinse down the anchorchain prior to stowage.  In the PNW we have always splashed a bucket or two of water on the muddy chain, but since we will be cruising long distance I'm wondering whether we need to install a through hull and wash down pump for Mexico and the tropics.   Perhaps not, with a sandy bottom.  What are other's experiences?

We generally found the bottom in the S. Pacific areas we cruised (Marquesas, Cook Is, Tonga, Fiji) to be quite clean - not much stuck on the chain coming up.  In a few places where we stayed anchored for weeks there would be some seaweed growth on the chain which could be rubbed off.  I don't think a water flush (unless it was a high-pressure stream) would have removed it.

We found that not having a chain-wash system was OK.

Wash down pump

We have found our wash down pump to be very useful in muddy estuaries and for washing down the deck and dinghy.  I just connected a tee into our head intake hose and that has served us well.  No need for a new through hull.

Washdown Pump
Hi David.  We can put a tee in our intake valve.  What kind of washdown pump did you install?  Annie

I'll have to dig around to find the actual Jabsco model.  Mine was a West Marine (really a Jabsco with Westmarine name on it) but I just bought a new one from  Eric at Poco Marine.  I'm sailing in Panama right now so it would be a lot easier for you to call him and mention the wash down pump he sold to Dave Smith on Nuage.  If that doesn't work send me an email at
