Sails are beautiful! As works of art, craft, and science, they are rich in history yet evolving with modern materials and our understanding of fluid dynamics. Sails deliver a practical and magical connection with wind and sea; they inspire and inform us in our adventures, discoveries, and dreams.

Purpose:
With photos, drawings, and sample sails, Carol will present and discuss the following sail topics:

  • Anatomy and vocabulary of sails and rigging
  • Specifics of sail geometry and shape
  • Definitions and advantages of various rigs
  • Offshore sail inventory and handling
  • Basic sail trim and trim tools
  • Storm sails and heavy weather tactics
  • Sail construction details including sailcloth and hardware
  • Basic sail repair and ditty

Instructor:
Sailmaker Carol Hasse has owned and operated Hasse & Company Port Townsend Sails Inc. since 1978.

Hasse came to sailmaking from a love of cruising. She has logged over 45,000 offshore miles in northern and southern latitudes on wood, fiberglass, ferro-cement, and steel boats ranging in size from 25-101 feet.  She has sailed on both mono and multi-hulls and on vessels with traditional and modern rigs.  Her most recent passage was aboard S/V Ocean Watch on the final leg of the historic Around the Americas circumnavigation. Ocean Watch was powered by sails built by Hasse’s crew at Port Townsend Sails.

Hasse is a founding board member of the Wooden Boat Foundation. Its premier event is the annual Port Townsend Wooden Boat Festival.  Hasse has been a judge at the Victoria Classic Boat Festival since 1999 and has served four times as a judge for Cruising World’s Boat of the Year competition at the Annapolis Boat Show.  She has taught at Safety at Sea Seminars on both coasts and demonstrated the use of the Lifesling recovery system for a video created by The Sailing Foundation and West Marine.  Hasse is also a contributor to the US Sailing Safety at Sea curriculum and course book.

Hasse regularly lectures for the Northwest Maritime Center.  She is active in teaching and lecturing on sailmaking, sail repair, sail inventory and sail handling and has written articles for Cruising World and 48°North.  Instructional venues include sail training vessels, boat shows, yacht clubs, offshore cruising seminars, Safety at Sea seminars, and Port Townsend Sails’ in-loft Hands-On Sail Repair Seminars.  She has been active in women’s and youth sail training in the Northwest and the South Pacific for over 35 years.  Her sail training experiences include 25’ open longboats, Orange Coast College’s Alaska Eagle (65’ Sparkman & Stephens), Mahina Expedition’s Mahina Tiare III (Hallberg Rassy 46), and the 101’ schooner Adventuress …as well as the boats of numerous customers throughout her 39 years of business.

Carol Hasse feels blessed to live in the Pacific Northwest where she has actively sailed her 25’ 1959 Nordic Folkboat, Lorraine, since 1979.
