A hands-on course for boat owners who already have a good basic knowledge of the operation and maintenance of diesel engines. In this small class students will work on an operational diesel engine on a stand in a garage, changing key components such as the alternator, starter and injectors.

Advanced Diesel with David West

Prerequisites:  

This is an advanced course.  Students should have completed a BCA intermediate level diesel course or be very familiar with diesel engine operation and maintenance.  Thank you.

Course Outline:

We have a working diesel engine on a stand in a garage.  This allows easy access for explanations and for doing service work.  The instructor will review fuel, cooling, electrical and lubrication systems.  Students will learn the correct procedure for bleeding the fuel system.  Students will then actually remove and replace the following components:

·         Alternator

·         Starter Motor

·         Fuel Injectors

Instructor:

David West is a highly experienced and knowledgeable diesel mechanic and instructor who comes highly recommended by a number of people who have attended his courses.  He is also a sailing instructor.

·         Licensed diesel mechanic with over 40 years of experience

·         Operated marine repair business for over 15 years

·         Operations Manager for Cooper Boating for 10 years

·         CYA Learn to Cruise Advanced Instructor & Instructor Evaluator

Course Materials:

The course will include explanatory handout materials.

Location:

At a private home  -  in the garage, open to the alley, unheated: Please Dress Warmly!

The fully detached garage is located behind the house.

9:00 am to 5:00 pm

Lunch:

Please bring a bag lunch, snacks and drink to the course. You may also wander over to West 10th to shops nearby.

Work Clothing Required:

This is a hand-on engine course.  You will get greasy.  Please dress in appropriate clothing, and bring gloves if you wish.

The garage is not heated so you also need warm clothing

Maximum Class Size:

6 students per session

Cost:

Bluewater Cruising Members  -  $145 each

Non-Members  -  $175 each

Cancellation Fee:

In the event of cancellation a processing fee of $15 will be charged
