VI Victoria 2018 - Icom M802: Starting From Scratch

Learn from US radio expert, experienced cruiser and author Terry Sparks. This course is based on Terry’s excellent book entitled Icom IC-M802 Starting from Scratch. It will cover installation, setup and operation of the Icom M802 HF SSB radio, the industry standard for long distance radio communication at sea.

Course Information:

Maintaining communications while at sea is one of the critical components of preparing for offshore voyaging. While new technologies are making communication easier, Single Side Band (SSB) HF radio is still the primary method of communication for most offshore sailors.  Topics include:

  • Operating the M802

  • Digital Selective Calling

  • Calls for Help

  • Making DSC Calls to Friends

  • Recommendations Prior to Heading Offshore

Format:
Classroom style.

 

Course Materials:
Registration includes
Icom IC-M802 Starting from Scratch. Terry is giving BCA a 20% discount on his book which normally retails for $55 USD.

Instructor:
Terry Sparks started his naval career as an electronics technician, repairing communications and radar equipment aboard diesel and missile submarines. After leaving active duty, Terry returned to school and attained a Bachelor of Science degree in Electrical Engineering. He was promoted to Ensign and ultimately retired as Commander. His FCC license history includes 1st Class Radio Telephone with Radar endorsement (changed to a General Class Radio Telephone by the FCC); Radio Operator Permit; Ships License; Amateur Extra Ham License; General Mobile Radio Service License; and Global Maritime Distress and Safety System Maintainer License.

Lunch:
You are encouraged to bring a bag lunch.  There are also numerous other options for a meal in Sidney.

Cost  -  Individual and Couples Pricing:
BCA Members: $130 (includes Icom IC-M802 Starting from Scratch)
                          $80 for spouse/partner if registering at the same time
Non-members: $160 (includes Icom IC-M802 Starting from Scratch)
                         $110 for spouse/partner if registering at the same time

Cancellation:
There is a $15 processing fee in the event of participant cancellation.
