Mid-Island Sail Training Weekend (MIST)
Tell a Friend About This EventTell a Friend

Mid Island Sail Training is a weekend of camaraderie and fun with the goal of making us better sailors in a more basic, practical sense. Circumnavigator Cresswell Walker will be this year's guest presenter. If you can't make it to Nanaimo on Saturday, you are welcome to participate on Sunday only. This is a chance to check out all those theories you read about over the winter, and the new equipment you just got at the boat show.

MIST (Mid Island Sail Training) is a weekend of camaraderie and fun with the goal of making us better sailors in a more basic, practical sense. It is hoped that participants will arrive at the docks at Newcastle Island, Nanaimo with their boats, although in the past we have had "boatless" people who have managed to book berths on others boats and have a great time.

Course Outline

Friday, May 11
Please bring something to contribute to an informal happy hour at 5pm on Protection Island (Grace & Rob Dodge, hosts).

Saturday, May 12:  9:00am - 5:00pm
Details coming soon, wind steering and anchoring in extreme situations are definitely on the agenda.

Potluck supper on Protection Island.

Sunday, May 13:  9:00am - ??
A day on the water at a predetermined location in the middle of the Strait; more details coming soon.

The program always seems to evolve with the interests and needs of the participants so don't be afraid to request any non electronic training you may want - heaving too, reefing on ALL points of sail, wind vanes etc.

Registration Information:
MIST is limited to 22 people.
Advance registration is required - please email or call 250-753-1245.

Registration Fee:
Cost per participant is $10, payable upon arrival.

Suggested Moorage:
Newcastle Island dock or mooring buoys, or anchoring in Mark Bay.

Skippers are encouraged to bring a mentor along with them. Request one when registering or search under RESOURCES/MENTORS on the BCA website.

Don't have a boat?
Boat-less sailors who wish to participate as crew can also register by contacting Rob Dodge; effort will be made to find a host boat and accommodation. Boat-less sailors are also encouraged to ask at Club Nights and/or use the website to try and line up their own ride.
