This course is for men and women who own and maintain their own sailboat, already have some basic knowledge of diesel engines, and want to gain a better understanding of them, including proper operation and more advanced maintenance procedures.

Vancouver Maritime Musuem

Course Outline:

Attendance at a prior BCA Basic Diesel course or a good basic knowledge of diesel engines is required.   This course is intended for those who own and maintain their own sailboat, or those who want to gain a better understanding of diesel engines, including proper operation and maintenance. 

  • Review of fuel, cooling and lubrication systems
  • Electrical system: batteries, alternators, AC chargers & inverters
  • Battery servicing
  • Various charging systems
  • Drives: straight drive, v-drive, sail drives
  • Shaft seals

Instructor:

David West is a highly experienced and knowledgeable diesel mechanic and instructor who comes highly recommended by past students. He is also a sailing instructor.

· Licensed diesel mechanic with over 40 years of experience

· Operated marine repair business for over 15 years

· Operations Manager for Cooper Boating for 10 years

· CYA Learn to Cruise Advanced Instructor & Instructor Evaluator

Course Materials:

The course will include explanatory handout materials.

You can bring a bag lunch; a food truck will also be arranged.

Maximum Class Size: 25 students

Cost:

Bluewater Cruising Members: $65 each (includes handout notes)

Non-Members: $85 each (includes handout notes)

Cancellation Fee:

In the event of cancellation a processing fee of $15 will be charged.
